In recent decades, new planning paradigms have reshaped cities through urban regeneration, smart technologies, and sustainable practices. These approaches, initially focused on affluent areas to attract tourism and businesses, must now be extended to deprived areas facing various urban challenges. These areas encounter issues such as pollution, social and cultural problems, inadequate services, and poor built environments, impacting livability, functionality, and overall well-being. In response to the growing need for climate change adaptation, Nature Based Solutions (NBS) are being implemented, with a new approach considering nature as a stakeholder itself. Cutting edge technologies like AI, machine learning, and extended reality are also emerging to enhance information delivery and community engagement.
GreenInCities seeks to develop methodologies and tools for collaborative climate mitigation and adaptation in urban planning, specifically targeting deprived areas. Addressing challenges includes improving societal readiness and awareness, expanding beyond traditional greening interventions, and leveraging advanced technologies for effective co-creation and urban regeneration.
