Dr. George Margetis is a computer scientist specialising in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Ambient Intelligence (AmI), Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI), Extended Reality (XR), Digital Accessibility, as well as analysis and design of information systems, and networks and telecommunications. He obtained his PhD in “Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction”, his M.Sc. in “Computer Networks and Digital Communications” and in "Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction", and his B.Sc. from the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete.
He is currently a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), leading the HCAI research activities of the HCI Laboratory. His past research interests and development work included network traffic measurement and analysis in high-speed networks, resource control and service differentiation in wired networks.
He is experienced in the design and implementation of AmI and inclusive Smart Environments, HCAI systems, XR applications and coherent software frameworks for streamlining the implementation of XR systems, as well as human-centered visual analytics. He has demonstrated scientific leadership in several research projects, including, real-time adaptation of intelligent user interfaces, accessible user interaction in AmI environments, natural multimodal interaction for XR applications, and AI systems based on HCAI approaches such as Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback.
His scholarly pursuits have delved into the intersection of HCAI, AmI, Universal Access and HCI, producing methodologies, guidelines, and tools for inclusive smart environments, as well as numerous intelligent systems and applications accessible for all. Since 2021, Dr Margetis has undertaken the role of leading the HCAI Research and Development activities of the HCI Laboratory of FORTH-ICS. Through this role, he has fostered a culture of user-centricity and inclusive human-centred design of AI systems that permeate the R&D process of the Lab’s endeavours, ensuring that the produced outcomes are not only technologically robust but also transparent, usable, and trustworthy, respecting humanity’s values.
