It is clear that traditional static models of network deployment have become impractical for cellular operators planning 5G networks, as the next generation of infrastructures and devices will need to be more flexible to support a much wider range of application services, operate over much wider bandwidths in different spectrum bands, and exploit multiple radio access technologies (RATs). In this talk, a framework will be presented that can help address the challenges involve in dynamic orchestration of a network from a pool of resources (especially spectral and infrastructure resources) that come not just from a cellular operator’s own resources but can also contain resource elements from other operators and/or private networks. A cross-disciplinary research framework will be discussed which follows naturally from recent trends in wireless networks, such as increased spectrum sharing and database enabled dynamic spectrum access (DSA), design of unified spectrum selection/aggregation techniques across different spectrum bands, inter-operator network sharing, and use of crowdsourcing techniques.
Zaheer Khan received his Dr.Sc. in telecommunication engineering from the University of Oulu, Finland, and his M.Sc degree in electrical engineering from Sweden, in 2011 and 2007, respectively. Currently, he is a principal investigator and research fellow at the Centre for Wireless Communication (CWC), University of Oulu. He was the recipient of the Marie Curie fellowship for 2007–2008. His research interests include application of game theory to model wireless networks, cognitive and cooperative communications, network sharing and better connectivity for the Internet of Things.
