[ICS-2369] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position of Researcher with a PhD degree in Computer Vision
We seek one experienced researcher in Computer Vision with a PhD degree. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH-ICS in the context of the H2020 project “MAGICIAN - iMmersive leArninG for ImperfeCtion detectIon and repAir through human-robot interactioN”, funded under Horizon 2020, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DIGITAL-EMERGING-02, and will work on Computer Vision related aspects. A common trait of many important markets is the increasing attention of consumers to the aesthetic quality of the products. Even products like mid-segment cars are required to be defect-free in all the areas falling under the direct sight of the customer. These expectations translate into high-quality standards in the production process, which are currently met by requiring an important physical effort to the workers in unsafe environments. The MAGICIAN project will take on the challenge producing a modular automation solution in which robots are used to detect and rework production defects before the last production phases commence and the aesthetics of the product is finalised. The project will produce two robotic solutions, one for defect analysis (the SR) and one for the defects’ rework (the CR). The SR and the CR can be used separately, with the humans remaining in charge of some of the activities, or in combination, with the CR operating on the defects identified by the SR. The SR can also be used in connection with the welding robotic station in order to adapt the process parameters. The robots will use Artificial Intelligence modules to detect and discriminate the defects from multi-modal data (the SR) or to decide the best policy to use for defect rework (the CR). In both cases, the decision logic of the modules will be trained using machine learning algorithms. The training data set will be acquired with the help of workers, who will operate on semiworked products within a controlled environment. The SR and the CR will rely on the software services of a common robotic platform. The solution will be developed adopting a human-centered approach, which will allow us to evaluate the impact of the innovation on the production processes and remove the most important asperities along this path. The effectiveness of the solution will be tested on a usecase, and its generality proven by recruiting additional contributors and use-cases through a FSTP scheme. The candidate will work on computer vision for measurement and analysis of human-objects interaction in order to contribute in tasks regarding the visual perception of the MAGICIAN system. More specifically, the intended topics of contribution are (a) Vision-based defects detection during inspection and (b) observation of human workers during defect handling and reworking.

[ICS-2268] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position, for one (1) Master’s degree holder in Language technologies
We seek one experienced scientist holding a Master degree in Language technologies with background in European and/or National ICT RTD projects. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH-ICS in the context of the project SemantyFish (Funded by OSCARS 1st Open Call for Open Science Projects and Services). The candidate will work with the conceptual modelling and design and implementation of ontologies for the SemantyFish project.SemantyFish aims to enhance the visibility, interoperability, and exploitability of FishBase by transforming it into a semantic web knowledge base. By leveraging semantic web technologies, the project will enable seamless data exchange, complex queries, and integration with global research infrastructures, advancing its role in open science and interdisciplinary research. SemantyFish is an open science project funded under the OSCARS 1st Open Call for Open Science Projects and Services. SemantyFish aims to transform FishBase into a semantic web knowledge base using cutting-edge semantic web technologies. By structuring data with standard vocabularies and ontologies, the project will enhance data interoperability, making FishBase more discoverable and accessible for both humans and machines. This shift will allow seamless data exchange across domains and enable more complex and meaningful data queries. In addition, it will enable richer, more meaningful and complex data queries and analysis by relying on semantic relationships between entities. As a semantic web knowledge base, its contents can be queried using SPARQL. Furthermore, a dedicated API will be implemented as a versatile gateway for accessing the wealth of resources of the knowledge base in different formats and standards. Designed with REST principles, it will offer simplicity, scalability and interoperability, making it the ideal interface for developers, scientists and researchers.

[ICS-2266] Call for expression of interest for one (1) part-time position, for one (1) MSc holder in Computer Science
We seek an experienced software engineer, holding a MSc in Computer Science, with background in European and/or National RTD Projects, to assist in the project activities, in particular for the design and implementation of ontologies and semantic data integration services for biodiversity data. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the project: VeriFish: The sustainability indicator framework to communicate responsible aquafood production and consumption patterns, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Programme (HORIZON-MISS-2023-OCEAN-01-10), Grant Agreement ID: 101156426”.VeriFish project aims to deliver an indicator framework to facilitate understanding of the complexity that lays behind the definition of sustainable seafood, to enhance communication about the importance of production and consumption of sustainable seafood and aquaculture. Despite its potential advantages in terms of climate impact, sustainability, and nutrition, seafood is frequently disregarded or lumped together with meat. The potential benefits of seafood are often overlooked, particularly in the transition towards a sustainable, equitable and balanced protein system. Seafood consumption in Europe is low compared to meat products, and locally produced seafood often cannot compete with imported products because consumers do not know about or value local seafood. To enable healthy and sustainable choices, consumers need information about sustainability and nutrient values as well as provenance and potential health risks and benefits. In this context, VeriFish will work on the creation of a prototype web application, a series of media products and recommendations for communicating sustainability indicators to various stakeholders including guidelines for retail and the hospitality sectors. The goal is to provide an accessible and dynamic framework for the improvement of communication and understanding of sustainable seafood production and consumption.
