The management of the scientific data is of paramount importance as it can help to verify, reuse and exploit the scientific results. It is important not only for the scientific community but also for citizens, since good practices in the scientific data management return as great benefits to the society and the citizens.Within the framework of this general direction, which is supported by the European Commission, the Information Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH has successfully hosted the Summer School for Scientific Data Management of the European Program EUDAT. The EUDAT program is funded by the European Union and its vision is to enable European researchers and professionals from any scientific domain to access, process and preserve data in a credible environment within a Collective Data Infrastructure designed as a network of collaborating data centers.
The summer school was attended by 40 postgraduate students and young scientists selected after evaluation from all over Europe (5 from the University of Crete and FORTH). The work of the five-day school was opened by Yannis Tzitzikas, Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete and Affiliated Researcher at the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH. Apart from lectures by scientists, researchers and engineers from all over Europe, the program of the school included practical exercises and was complemented by a tour of the participants in the city of Heraklion and the archaeological site of Knossos.
