The Next Generation Internet European initiative has started under the H2020 for contributing to the research efforts towards an Internet that respects human and societal values: privacy, participation and diversity, and offers new functionalities to support people’s real needs and address global sustainability challenges. Those human and societal values are stemming from the very same policies the European Union is trying to promote at global level. The NGI is dedicated to this goal, and that of fostering a vibrant Open Internet movement that links research, policy, and society. The implementation approach of this initiative is relatively new through the so called cascade funding: New funding opportunities for relatively small teams of researchers and innovators at work to build a better Internet through a number of Open Calls on areas related to privacy, decentralisation, search and discovery, trust enhancing, experimentation, open internet architectures, service and data portability, e-ids etc.(see current and upcoming H2020 calls) Collaboration between EU and US in those areas is also encouraged by continuous exchange of ideas, funding fellowships and conducting common experiments.
