Topic: Design of Intelligent Perception and Guidance Systems for Autonomous Quadrupedal Robots in Unstructured Battlefield Terrains. Description We seek one experienced member for our team, a Scientist or Engineer with a Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) and currently an active Master’s student (M.Sc. student), with a strong background in robotics, computer vision, and embedded systems. The successful candidate will conduct research and development on perception and autonomous navigation algorithms for quadrupedal robotic platforms within the framework of the SABER project. The SABER project (Strategic Autonomous vehicles for BattlEfield Reconnaissance and logistics), funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF), aims to develop a universal, multi-agent system of collaborative flying (UAV) and ground (UGV) robots. The project focuses on the integration of "Agentic AI" solutions to perform complex reconnaissance and logistics missions in hostile, GNSS-denied, and unstructured environments. SABER researches hardware and software components as add-on solutions to enhance autonomous capacities for near real-time situational awareness. The successful candidate will participate in the development of guidance and perception systems for quadrupedal robots, with an emphasis on the use of visual markers (AprilTags) and depth sensors for obstacle detection and avoidance. Responsibilities include the implementation of SLAM and path planning algorithms in both simulation environments and physical platforms, as well as providing technical support for the integration of ground and aerial assets. Furthermore, the candidate will contribute to the authoring of technical reports and the evaluation of navigation results in unstructured terrains.
