[ICS-2500] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position, for Scientist or Engineer with a Master’s degree (M.Sc.), enrolled to a Ph.D. program in Computer Science or Engineering

Topic: Development of Robotic Skill Libraries and Mechatronic Control Frameworks for Autonomous Payload Exchange and Air-Ground Integration. Description We seek one experienced member for our team, a Scientist or Engineer with a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) and currently pursuing a PhD, with a strong background in robotic manipulation, mechatronics, and autonomous systems. The successful candidate will conduct research and development on mechatronic control and autonomous docking frameworks for heterogeneous robotic formations within the framework of the SABER project. The SABER project (Strategic Autonomous vehicles for BattlEfield Reconnaissance and logistics), funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF), aims to develop a universal, multi-agent system of collaborative flying (UAV) and ground (UGV) robots. The project focuses on "Universal Multi-Agent Retrofitting," enabling existing platforms to perform complex aerial deliveries and data gathering in hostile, GNSS-denied, and unstructured environments. SABER researches hardware and software components as add-on solutions to enhance autonomous capacities for near real-time situational awareness. The successful candidate will be involved in the design and implementation of mechatronic control frameworks and the development of "Skill Libraries" for autonomous payload exchange. Responsibilities include the development of docking and latching algorithms for air-ground integration, the design of robotic manipulation sequences for cargo swapping, and the preparation of technical documentation and simulation results. Furthermore, the candidate will support the technical validation of the project’s mechatronic components in simulation and laboratory environments and contribute to the "Skill Library" integration in accordance with the Grant Agreement.

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Machine Learning Engineer – Research Assistant in “Nonlinear time series processing and high – level data analysis” on an international research project within the Institute of Computer Science (ICS), Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH). We seek a candidate to join the R&D activities of FORTH-ICS in the context of the TRIERES project, aiming to create a Hydrogen Valley in Greece, Balkans, South-eastern Europe, and the wider area of Eastern Mediterranean. The selected candidate will contribute to the development and evaluation of advanced data analysis and forecasting methods for the TRIERES Valley ecosystem. The work will involve designing and implementing machine learning and statistical models for the monitoring and prediction of hydrogen production, storage, and consumption time series. The candidate will be self-motivated, have great attention to detail, with strong organizational and communication skills, and will be able to work on their own initiative. The candidate will be working in an international and multidisciplinary team, with plenty of opportunities for training and development. The role will be based at the premises of FORTH in Heraklion, on the island of Crete.
