] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position, for a Computer Scientist or Engineer
We seek one experienced member for our team, one Computer Scientist or Engineer, with background in European and/or National ICT RTD projects, to contribute to the research and development activities of the COLOURS - Collaborative On-cloud Lab for the conservation and digital restoration of ColOUred heritage collectionS project (Grant Agreement number: 101233413), funded under HORIZON-CL2-2024-HERITAGE-ECCCH-01-05.Preserving Europe’s cultural heritage requires advanced digital tools that enable seamless collaboration among curators, conservators, and scientists. These tools must preserve primary data referenced to digital representations and twins and maintain documentation of analysis and reasoning processes. They must also preserve “raw” primary data to ensure accuracy and integrity and support future analysis techniques as the methods evolve. Colour, a key element of cultural heritage, is critical to understanding the historical and artistic significance of artefacts. However, its preservation faces challenges such as fading, alteration or loss. Events like the Notre Dame fire highlight the need for adaptive collaborative environments, while public reaction to the Sistine Chapel restoration highlights the importance of tools that predict and communicate restoration results. Building on 2 years of research and development conducted under PERCEIVE, the project aims to make a major contribution to the digital transition of cultural heritage conservation and restoration by developing integrated colour analysis and restoration tools tailored to diverse artefacts, including polychrome sculptures, paintings, textiles, historic films and photographs. These tools, fully interoperable with the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage, will provide high-precision analysis, simulate restoration results with perceptual accuracy, and support interdisciplinary collaboration through hybrid spaces that merge virtual and physical environments. These spaces will enable real-time interaction with the digital twins , fostering inclusive decision-making among conservators, curators, and scientists, while ensuring accessibility for remote participants. In addition, the project seeks to enhance public engagement by leveraging mixed reality technologies and digital storytelling to showcase restored colours and convey the authenticity of artefacts, promoting a deeper appreciation of CH.

] Call for expression of interest for one (1) BSc holder in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
We seek one experienced member for our team, with a BSc degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the project “Craft Understanding, Education, Training, and Preservation for Posterity and Prosperity” (Craeft), funded under Horizon EUROPE, HORIZON-CL2-2021-HERITAGE-01 (RIA). Craeft is coordinated by FORTH-ICS. The project aims to deepen our understanding of making activities that include care, judgement, and dexterity standing on Anthropology, Knowledge Representation, Cognitive Science, Art History, Advanced Digitisation, Audiovisual & Haptic Immersivity, and Computational Intelligence to cover the multifaceted expression of crafts as living and developing heritage, as a sustainable source of income, and as the expression of the mind through imagery, technology, and sedimented knowledge. A generative approach will prove sufficiency for digital conservation, reenactable preservation, and scaling of approach for the full range of materials and techniques. Craeft will catalyse craft education and training with intuitive digital aids, telecommunications, craft-specific simulators, advanced immersivity, and high-end digitisation, to widen access, economise learning, increase exercisability, and relax remoteness constraints in craft learning. The integration of haptics intelligence haptics in digital design connects tacit knowledge in computer-aided craft-specific design tools. Workflow simulation will support experimental archaeology for the recovery of lost techniques. The analytic workflow analysis leads to digital fabrication opportunities for menial tasks, material savings and reuse, and reduction of energy consumption. Digital dimensions attached to individual works of craft will enable certification and attachment of digital content, but also enable reputation and community building, supported by a Community Portal for professionals and the public that connects to the New Media, hosts heterogeneous craft portfolios, and registers practitioner credentials. The efficacy of the approach will be piloted in eight representative craft instances with the cross-cutting objectives of Craft Education & Training, Design, Valorisation, and Community services across the range of materials.

] Call for expression of interest for two (2) positions, one (1) MSc holder in Computer Science and one (1) MSc holder in Computer Systems / Electronics
We seek two experienced members for our team, with an MSc degree in Computer Science. The candidates will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the project “foundaTion mOdels for Robots that haNdle smAll, soft and Deformable Objects”, (TORNADO), funded under Horizon EUROPE, HORIZON-CL4-2024-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01 (RIA). TORNADO is coordinated by IOTAM, Cyprus. The project aims to develop an innovative, multifunctional and adaptive cloud robotics platform, supporting advanced navigation of an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) within complex, time-varying, real-world, human-populated indoor environments. The TORNADO AMR will be able to manipulate small, soft or deformable objects (SSDs) to an unprecedented degree of success, as well as to naturally interact with humans via hand gestures or verbal conversation, by exploiting the zero-shot generalization abilities of deep neural Foundation Models (FMs) for robotics. The AMR's intelligence will rely on a pool of pretrained cloud-hosted FMs, which shall be further adjusted on-the-fly to the current situation via Out-of-Distribution Detection, Test-Time Adaptation and Few-Shot Adaptation subsystems. These will exploit human feedback if available, but will also support autonomous and dynamic cognitive adaptation. Additionally, the TORNADO system will be able to automatically select and set-up on-the-fly the most suitable combination of FMs and non-neural robotics algorithms during deployment, depending on the current situation. In cases of failure, on-the-fly skill acquisition will be supported via integrated, novel Learning-from-Demonstration methods facilitated by an innovative Augmented Reality (AR) interface and eXplainable AI (XAI) algorithms. The adaptive TORNADO system will allow the robot to perform difficult, non-repetitive manipulation tasks on previously unseen SSDs that may change shape during handling, as well as to flexibly adjust to SSDs of different sizes during operation. Measurement of human trust to interactive robots and human behavioral modeling will aid optimal integration/acceptance of TORNADO into society. Validation will take place at TRL-5 in 3 different industrial Use-Cases: flexible small gears manipulation and deformable ply-sheets handling (gears factory), palliative patient care (hospital) and product quality sampling/waste collection (dairy processing plant).
