ICS-2369
] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position of Researcher with a PhD degree in Computer Vision
We seek one experienced researcher in Computer Vision with a PhD degree. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH-ICS in the context of the H2020 project “MAGICIAN - iMmersive leArninG for ImperfeCtion detectIon and repAir through human-robot interactioN”, funded under Horizon 2020, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DIGITAL-EMERGING-02, and will work on Computer Vision related aspects. A common trait of many important markets is the increasing attention of consumers to the aesthetic quality of the products. Even products like mid-segment cars are required to be defect-free in all the areas falling under the direct sight of the customer. These expectations translate into high-quality standards in the production process, which are currently met by requiring an important physical effort to the workers in unsafe environments. The MAGICIAN project will take on the challenge producing a modular automation solution in which robots are used to detect and rework production defects before the last production phases commence and the aesthetics of the product is finalised. The project will produce two robotic solutions, one for defect analysis (the SR) and one for the defects’ rework (the CR). The SR and the CR can be used separately, with the humans remaining in charge of some of the activities, or in combination, with the CR operating on the defects identified by the SR. The SR can also be used in connection with the welding robotic station in order to adapt the process parameters. The robots will use Artificial Intelligence modules to detect and discriminate the defects from multi-modal data (the SR) or to decide the best policy to use for defect rework (the CR). In both cases, the decision logic of the modules will be trained using machine learning algorithms. The training data set will be acquired with the help of workers, who will operate on semiworked products within a controlled environment. The SR and the CR will rely on the software services of a common robotic platform. The solution will be developed adopting a human-centered approach, which will allow us to evaluate the impact of the innovation on the production processes and remove the most important asperities along this path. The effectiveness of the solution will be tested on a usecase, and its generality proven by recruiting additional contributors and use-cases through a FSTP scheme. The candidate will work on computer vision for measurement and analysis of human-objects interaction in order to contribute in tasks regarding the visual perception of the MAGICIAN system. More specifically, the intended topics of contribution are (a) Vision-based defects detection during inspection and (b) observation of human workers during defect handling and reworking.

We seek two Computer Scientists or Engineers (BSc or Msc holders) in Machine Learning with background in RTD projects. The candidates will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH-ICS in the context of EDF-2021-DIGIT-R-2 project “KOIOS – Knowledge Extraction, Machine Learning and other AI approaches for secure, robust, frugal and explainable solutions in Defence Applications” (EDF-2021-DIGIT-R-2-101103770-KOIOS), funded under EDF-2021-DIGIT-R-2, and will work on Machine Learning and Sensory data processing related aspects. The main objective of our project, KOIOS, is to develop new AI-based methods that are trustworthy (under human control and explainable), robust (resilient to attacks) and frugal in the use of resources (data, computing capabilities, energy,…) addressing tasks in a more efficient manner than the current state-of-the-art ML/DL methods while maintaining similar performance, and improving resilience (for adversarial attacks), consistent behaviour and limiting the cognitive and technical efforts when adapting to new data or dynamic contexts. The candidates will contribute in tasks regarding the ML capabilities of advanced autonomous vehicles.

] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position of student enrolled to a University MSc Program in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering
We seek one (1) student enrolled to a University MSc Program in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH in the context of the EC-funded project AERO. To ensure the successful integration of the EU processor into the cloud computing ecosystem and strengthen even more EU data sovereignty, it is necessary to develop the software support at the same pace with the hardware development. The harmonic relationship of the developed software and hardware is of paramount importance in order to establish an EU cloud platform able to compete with the mainstream solutions which are currently delivered by US companies. AERO aims to upbring and optimize an open-source software ecosystem that encompasses a wide range of software components ranging from operating systems to compilers, runtimes, system software and auxiliary software deployment services for cloud computing. The AERO software stack combines the aforementioned software components with novel software and hardware interfaces as a means to seamlessly exploit the heterogeneity aspects of the EU processor with regards to high performance, energy efficiency, and security. The ultimate objective of AERO is to facilitate easy migration of existing cloud customers to a cloud infrastructure that harnesses the capabilities of the EU processor. To showcase early adoption and the potential business value, the developed software and hardware technologies will be piloted by use cases representative of important EU industrial domains, such as automotive and space exploration.
