[ICS-2414] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position of Researcher with a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or a related Engineering field
We seek one researcher with a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related Engineering field. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH-ICS in the context of the H2020 project “MAGICIAN - iMmersive leArninG for ImperfeCtion detectIon and repAir through human-robot interactioN”, funded under Horizon 2020, HORIZON-CL4-2022-DIGITAL-EMERGING-02, and will work on Computer Vision related aspects. A common trait of many important markets is the increasing attention of consumers to the aesthetic quality of the products. Even products like mid-segment cars are required to be defect-free in all the areas falling under the direct sight of the customer. These expectations translate into high-quality standards in the production process, which are currently met by requiring an important physical effort to the workers in unsafe environments. The MAGICIAN project will take on the challenge producing a modular automation solution in which robots are used to detect and rework production defects before the last production phases commence and the aesthetics of the product is finalized. The project will produce two robotic solutions, one for defect analysis (the SR) and one for the defects’ rework (the CR). The SR and the CR can be used separately, with the humans remaining in charge of some of the activities, or in combination, with the CR operating on the defects identified by the SR. The SR can also be used in connection with the welding robotic station in order to adapt the process parameters. The robots will use Artificial Intelligence modules to detect and discriminate the defects from multi-modal data (the SR) or to decide the best policy to use for defect rework (the CR). In both cases, the decision logic of the modules will be trained using machine learning algorithms. The training data set will be acquired with the help of workers, who will operate on semiworked products within a controlled environment. The SR and the CR will rely on the software services of a common robotic platform. The solution will be developed adopting a human-centered approach, which will allow us to evaluate the impact of the innovation on the production processes and remove the most important asperities along this path. The effectiveness of the solution will be tested on a usecase, and its generality proven by recruiting additional contributors and use-cases through a FSTP scheme.

[ICS-2412] Call for expression of interest for two (2) systems software engineers, with MSc degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
We seek two (2) systems software engineers, with a MSc degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. The candidates will contribute to the R&D activities of FORTH, in the context of the EuroHPC-funded project SPACE, in either a full-time (preferred) or part-time capacity. The SPACE Centre-of-Excellence project aims to foster the reuse and sharing of algorithms and software components in the Astrophysics and Cosmology (A&C) application domain, where High Performance Computing (HPC)-based numerical simulations are outstanding instruments for scientific discovery. SPACE aims to extensively re-engineer the target codes to engage with new computational solutions suitable for exascale and post-exascale computing systems, and to adopt innovative programming paradigms, software solutions, and libraries. The SPACE consortium will pursue this goal through co-design activities that bring together scientists, code developers, HPC experts, HW manufacturers and SW developers, advancing lighthouse exascale A&C applications, codes, services and know-how promoting the use of upcoming exascale and post-exascale computing capabilities. In addition, SPACE will address the high-performance data analysis of the data torrent produced by exascale A&C simulation applications, also with machine-learning and visualization tools. The deployment of applications running on different platforms will be facilitated by federating capabilities focusing on code repositories and data sharing, and integrating European astrophysical communities around exascale computing by adopting software and data standards and interoperability protocols.

[ICS-2158] Call for expression of interest for one (1) position of a Hardware R&D Engineer, in the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH)
We seek one (1) Hardware R&D Engineer for our team. The candidates should have proven experience on hardware RTL design and validation with a background in European Research Projects. The candidate will participate in the R&D activities of FORTH-ICS in the context of the H2020-JTI-EuroHPC project The European PILOT. Accelerators provide the majority of performance in modern High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems and are the fundamental building blocks for Exascale systems. The European PILOT (Pilot using Independent Local & Open Technology) will be the first demonstration of two ALL European HPC and High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA) (AI, ML, DL) accelerators, designed, implemented, manufactured, and owned by Europe. The European PILOT combines open-source software (SW) and open and proprietary hardware (HW) to deliver the first completely European full stack software, accelerator, and integrated ecosystem based on RISC-V accelerators coupled to any general purpose processor (CPU) via PCIe Gen 6.0 or CXL 3.0. This pilot will demonstrate key HPC and HPDA workloads and software stacks. The European PILOT is also the first to demonstrate an ALL European HPC ecosystem. The accelerators will be manufactured in the new European GlobalFoundries 12 nm advanced silicon technology, a major demonstration of European technology independence. The European PILOT combines cutting edge research utilizing SW/HW co-design to demonstrate HPC and HPDA accelerators running key applications and libraries in a full software stack including middleware, runtimes, compilers, and tools for the emerging RISC-V ecosystem. The European PILOT is able to produce a full stack (SW and HW) research prototype by leveraging and extending the work done in multiple European projects like: EPI, MEEP, POP2 CoE, EuroEXA, and ExaNeSt. This pre-production system can only be realized with a combination of existing IP, HW emulation using FPGAs, and real ASIC prototypes that demonstrate the full stack feasibility of the hardware and software. Finally, while the applications we use span AI to HPC, the aggressive ASIC implementation (chiplet size and small 2 geometry) will be the smallest technology node manufactured in Europe and can easily be adapted for a near-future HPC implementation.
