The main goal of the SmartCityBus project is the development and operation of a public transport management platform, in order to determine in a dynamic and efficient way the routes and the selection of the fleet used in order to better serve passengers and optimally use the available resources. Through the platform, passengers will be able to express their interest in moving in a timely manner and the current demand at the stops will be accurately calculated as well as the demand will be estimated in the near future. SmartCityBus will combine this information with current vehicle traffic and load data as it is collected by IoT devices and processed in real time. Thus, the transport company will be able to provide more accurate information about the arrival times of buses at the stops, to intervene dynamically and efficiently with changes in itineraries where there is a need as well as to make timely routing of spare buses on specific lines and stops where deemed necessary. As part of the project, the platform will be adapted and used on a pilot basis by the Urban KTEL of Ioannina (AKTELI). More specifically, the objectives of the project are to design, develop and control:
- Applied solutions for dynamic and automated collection, recording and organization of large volumes of vehicle and passenger traffic data.
- The interactive and accurate information and service of passengers as well as the information of the drivers of the vehicles and the control center (station) of the company.
- Real-time data analysis methods, with the aim of timely production of effective proposals for dynamic routing planning according to demand.
- Accurate algorithms for estimating the arrival time of buses at their stops with the aim of significantly improving in relation to the current technology.
- Methods of systematic recording and analysis of the history of the routes and their load as well as the demand of the passengers, in order to produce proposals regarding the long-term redesign of the regular routes and the stops, the forecast of emergencies, as well as the long-term requirements fleet.
- The development and implementation of business models for the commercial operation of intelligent public transport systems.
