Following a brief general introduction intro the properties of Bose-condensed quantum gases, I will review a series of results on the nonlinear dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates, in particular the emergence of Faraday waves, by means of analytic and numerical means. The analytical treatment relies on reducing the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation which describes the 0 K dynamics of the condensates to one- and two-dimensional partial differential equations (with either polynomial or non-polynomial nonlinearities) which allow straightforward analytical analyses and simplified numerical treatments.
Dr. Alexandru Nicolin started his physics studies at Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania, in 2000, and then moved to University of Copenhagen, Denmark, from where he graduated in 2008 with a Ph.D. in theoretical physics. Following his Ph.D., Dr. Nicolin joined The Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering in Magurele, Romania, where he is currently a Senior Scientist with the Department of Computational Physics and Information Technologies. In 2014, Dr. Nicolin defended his Habilitation Thesis at Politehnica University of Bucharest, where he now serves as Ph.D. supervisor.
