Some recent results in signal processing techniques for multi-user wireless systems

Abstract:

Dr. Vassilaras will provide a short overview of research activities at the Broadband Wireless and Sensor Networks (BWiSE) group of the Athens Information Technology (AIT) center for research and education. The presentation will cover the main research areas and themes addressed by the group as well as an outline of the current and recently concluded research projects in which BWiSE has participated.

Dr. Alexandropoulos will then present selected results from his recent research work in the group, focusing on cooperative multi-antenna techniques for multi-user wireless systems. Such techniques have been identified as an indispensable technology for the physical layer of next generation wireless networks, offering theoretical capacity gains and increased reliability. A brief overview of the available techniques will be first presented along with performance results for a newly proposed reconfigurable algorithm. In addition, motivated by the very recently proposed concept of Licensed Shared Access (LSA), a.k.a. Authorized Shared Access (ASA), an opportunistic beamforming technique with user scheduling for a cooperative cognitive network will be presented.

Bio:

Dr. Spyros Vassilarasis an Assistant Professor at AIT, which he joined in November 2003. He received the Engineering Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1995 and both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering from Boston University in 1997 and 2001, respectively. His current research interests include various aspects of wireless, ad hoc, and sensor networks such as routing, transmission scheduling, cross-layer optimization, cognitive networking, network and data security (including cooperation and policy reinforcement), as well as context aware services and applications over wireless networks. Prof. Vassilaras has participated in the EU funded research projects BROADWAY, WINSOC, MAGNET-Beyond, CROWN, SmartEN, PROACTIVE, CONTENT and ADEL. Dr. George C. Alexandropoulos is a senior researcher at AIT. He received the Engineering Diploma in Computer Engineering and Informatics, the M.A.Sc. Degree (with distinction) in Signal Processing and Communications, and the Ph.D. Degree in Wireless Communications from the University of Patras (UoP), Greece, in 2003, 2005, and 2010, respectively. His research interests include cooperative and cognitive radio systems, fading channels, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques, massive MIMO systems, and signal processing for wireless communications. Dr. Alexandropoulos has participated in several national and EU funded research projects: ACE II, NEWCOM++, SatNeX II, R3-COP, HiATUS, HARP and ADEL. He is a member of the IEEE Communications and Signal Processing Societies and the Technical Chamber of Greece. He currently serves on the editorial board of the KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Systems and Recent Advances in Communications and Networking Technology (Bentham Science Publishers) and acts as a Reviewer for several international journals and conferences (including the IEEE, IET and EURASIP). He received a Postgraduate Scholarship from the Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training II; a student travel grant for the 2010 IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference in Miami, FL, USA; and the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award by a Greek University in the fields of informatics and telecommunications from the Informatics and Telematics Institute, Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2010. He has authored over 50 journal and conference papers as well as project reports, and he was recognized as Exemplary Reviewer for IEEE Wireless Communications Letters in February 2013.
