Optimizing Energy Systems using Dynamic Programming

Abstract:

In this lecture I will present the required steps/methodology used on a Small scale case (house/domotics) towards a large scale one (smart city) under an Energy Efficiency situation. The integration of the various energy systems and the required optimization algorithms (stochastic dynamic programming) are also included in this part. Thus, initially the creation of a Software Tool for a single House Energy Management Systems (HEMS) followed by the further extension to multiple houses under a microgrid concept is given. As the scale increases then the creation of a more complex tool on the efficiency/optimization is required for the Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS). This system will have to operate also in presence of microrenewables (i.e., wind, solar, CHP) and the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) with the available parking space (underground or on surface), either on an islanded way or connected to the electricity grid under a symmetric/asymmetric situation functioning as a microproducer while this integrated tool is also the objective of this work. Bio:

Christos S. Ioakimidis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. He holds a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Greece (1994), a MSc degree in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, USA (1996), a PhD in Mechanical & Chemical Engineering, U.K. (2001), and a MBA, Greece (2007). He is currently a Senior Researcher/Professor and Group Leader on Energy Modeling and Systems Integration at DeustoTech, Energy Unit, University of Deusto, Spain and a Visiting Scholar at MIT, USA while he has been an Assistant Professor at IST, of the MITPortugal program. He is the recipient of various research national and international awards (graduate, Marie Curie-EU, IKY-Greece, etc) and has been a research professor for 18 years in various Universities and Research Institutions in Europe and USA in the field of nanotechnology and energy. He is the author of various research reports, white papers and technical manuals (20), books and book chapters (10), monographs (9) and has been author/co-author of more than 100 articles in international journals and International Conferences under peer-reviewed. His research interests focus on energy modeling, intelligent grids, energy systems integration (electric vehicles, energy storage, Carbon capture and storage, renewable, microrenewables), economic operation of power systems, innovation and green economy and nanomaterials applied on energy and health issues.
