Pattern Insight was started in 2006 as an effort to commercialize the research of its founders at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The initial technology around large scale systems data mining that the founders developed at the University became the basis of Pattern Insight. I will describe the challenges and lessons in turning pure academic research into an established software company with customers some the biggest technology companies in the world, 100% annual growth and millions of dollars in revenue. Furthermore, I will present the current state of the search and analysis technology for IT data that Pattern Insight has developed along with some open problems in both the technology and the market it operates.
Spiros is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Pattern Insight, a software company based in Mountain View CA that builds search and data analysis solutions that are used by some of the biggest technology companies in the world. Before co-founding Pattern Insight, Spiros conducted research in systems mining and reliability as a member of the Opera research group at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign that created the core technology behind Pattern Insight. He has published several research papers on systems and software engineering. Spiros previously worked at Google. He has a background on information mining from systems data, search engines, and large scale software systems development.
