We are very happy to announce that HOBBIT is now two years old! The project consortium members were very active in this year and worked extensively towards the project’s major results: benchmark development, deployment of the HOBBIT platform and challenge organisation!

HOBBIT during its first year was very active in several areas: members of the consortium attended a number of academic and industry-related events and conferences and published a number of posts on several topics related to benchmarking. Furthermore, members of the HOBBIT community were asked to complete a Survey that allowed HOBBIT partners to clarify the requirements for the HOBBIT benchmarks and platform.

EUROSERVER, a leading EU-funded research project, is paving the way toward lower energy consumption in data centers. Based on the concept of chiplets, where multiple silicon subsystems are mounted in an integrated device, along with an associated new groundbreaking system architecture, the project has enabled more energy-efficient servers and has even inspired startups motivated by the new technology.

FORTH – Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas, in Heraklion, Greece and KALEAO Ltd. – High Tech company based in Cambridge, UK – announced today the creation of the KALEAO's Heraklion development centre that officially seals their on-going collaboration towards a joint research lab on low power computing and shows a clear indication of the growing international high-tech involvement in Crete, Greece. The next generation of supercomputers must be capable of a billion billion calculations per second. These are referred to as Exascale computers and with this ability to undertake such volume of calculations, they will transform our understanding of the world through advanced simulation and problem solving.

The new EU project “LISTEN” is working on creating a robust, hands-free speech control interface for home systems. The partners from Germany, Italy and Greece will develop a smart-home-specific natural voice interface to web services. At the end of April 2015, the e-SENS project tested the first integration of the e-SENS Building Block (BB) ‘Evidence Emitter’, a mechanism for achieving non-repudiation in cross-border communication though evidence generation and collection. The solution was presented during the 15th European IHE Connectathon event, an annual connectivity test marathon organised this year in Luxembourg by IHE-Europe in partnership with the Luxembourgish national e-Health agency, Agence eSanté. During one week, 300 participants, representing 74 vendors, performed 2300 tests on the Gazelle GITB compliant tool. The e-Health domain of e-SENS took advantage of this event to demonstrate the efficacy of the ‘Evidence Emitter’ BB by testing the integration into the OpenNCP software, which enables secure exchange of data between the National Contact Points (NCP) for cross-border healthcare.

The research project TransForm, where the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Ressearch and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) acted as the coordinator, has recently been completed. TransForm was a project funded by the European Commission in the context of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network Action. The project contributed significantly to building the theoretical underpinning for the design and analysis of Transactional Memory (TM) systems.
One of the main challenges facing next generation Cloud platform services is the need to simultaneously achieve ease of programming, consistency, and high scalability. Big Data applications have so far focused on batch processing. The next step for Big Data is to move to the online world. This shift raises the requirements for transactional guarantees when updating data.
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are considered as a promising solution for providing scalable, ubiquitous, reliable and cost-effective broadband access in rural environments. WMNs are composed of many autonomous nodes connected with each other wirelessly, that forward the data to the nodes-gateways to the Internet. In this respect, the network coverage can be expanded easily and without the need of ground fixed networking that is expensive and not easily managed.
A new distinction for FORTH, Greece's major Research Centre, came through the recent approval by the ERC (European Research Council) of one more proposal that was submitted by Dr. Xenofontas Dimitropoulos of FORTH's Institute of Computer Science (ICS). This ERC grant will fund Dimitropoulos' "NetVolution" project, to perform research on evolving the routing system of the Internet. ERC starting grants are considered highly honorary: they are given for cutting edge research and they are very competitive -- in 2013, out of 3,329 proposals that were submitted Europe-wide and across all disciplines, only 287 were accepted, i.e. just nine percent (9%); only two (2) of these 287 approved grants are given to researchers in Greek institutions, and "NetVolution" is one of the two. Dr. Dimitropoulos is repatriating to Greece, coming to FORTH and the University of Crete, where he has been elected Assistant Professor, leaving his position with ETH Zurich.
Noise in everyday life is a significant and growing problem that, according to the World Health Organisation, is responsible for many healthy years of life lost. And it is not just traffic,mobile devices or so-called personal music equipment that is responsible, but speech itself. Anyone unfortunate enough to spend much time at a public transport interchange or airport is assailed by loud, distorted and repetitive announcements. Keeping the volume high is the easy way to ensure that anyone listening gets the message, especially in noisy environments, but is it the smartest solution?

The paper entitled “Programming Smart Object Federations for Simulating and Implementing Ambient Intelligence Scenarios”, presented by Ioannis Georgalis, PhD Candidate at the University of Crete and member of the HCI Laboratory of ICS-FORTH, received the Best Student Paper Award at the 3rd International Conference on Pervasive and Embedded Computing and Communications Systems (PECCS 2013, Barcelona, Spain 19-21 February 2013).
IOLanes dramatically improves the I/O behavior of data-centric workloads on shared virtualized servers in the data-centre.
The IOLanes project (www.iolanes.eu) over the last three years, since its start date on 1-Jan-2010 has examined fundamental issues related to I/O for data-centers. I/O is today a main problem for modern applications and is considered one of the issues that research needs to address in next-generation IT infrastructures.

The REtinal Vascular Modelling, Measurement and Diagnosis (REVAMMAD) project aims to train a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists for the academic, clinical and industrial sectors, and to trigger a new wave of biomedical interventions; PhD students will be trained by some of the EU’s leading academics and practitioners to further advances in diagnosis, prognosis and prevention of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke and coronary heart disease and retinal diseases. The project is funded by the European Union's 7th Framework (FP7) Marie Curie Initial Training Network programme and has a 3.8 million euro budget.
