Cyclic division algebra based space-time codes

The aim of this talk is to demonstrate how Cyclic Division Algebras (CDA) and their orders can be used to construct efficient space-time codes that improve the quality of wireless communications. This is done by embedding the information bits to be transmitted into smart algebraic structures, such as matrix representations of order lattices arising from CDAs. We will recall the essential algebraic definitions and structures and familiarize the audience with the transmission model for fading channels. We will also discuss examples of space-time codes designed especially for digital video broadcasting (DVB), which is an application of major current interest.


Camilla Hollanti received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Turku, Finland, in 2003 and 2009, respectively, both in pure mathematics. Her research is in the area of applications of algebraic number theory in wireless communications with emphasis on MIMO lattice code design. Since June 2004, she has been with the Department of Mathematics, University of Turku, Finland. In 2005, she visited the Department of Algebra at Charles' University, Prague, Czech Republic for six months. During 2009-2012 she was leading the project "Applications of Class Field Theory in Present and Future Multiuser Communications" at the University of Turku, Finland. She joined the Department of Mathematics, University of Tampere, Finland, as a Lecturer for the academic year 2009-2010. Since November 2011, she has been with the Department of Mathematics and System Analysis at the Aalto University, Finland, as Assistant Professor.
