CORMOS: A communication-oriented runtime system for sensor networks

CORMOS is a communication-oriented runtime system for sensor networks. CORMOS is tailored to provide easy-to-use abstractions and treat communication as a first class citizen rather than an extension, to be highly modular with unified application and system interfaces, and to deal with sensor limitations on concurrency, memory, and power. The current CORMOS prototype runs on various sensor platforms, including Crossbow motes and ATMEL and Chipcon development kits. We are currently designing our own sensor platform based on the Chipcon CC1010 single-chip microcontroller and RF tranceiver.

We are currently targeting, in collaboration with the Computational Vision and Robotics Laboratory, the deployment of CORMOS in monitoring applications where sensors collaborate with autonomous robotic platforms in detecting, monitoring and tracking of assets, goods and people in large-scale premises by deploying under a common framework: (a) Low-cost intelligent sensors with RF communication and processing capabilities that can by deployed in large numbers. (b) Autonomous robotic vehicles for providing surveillance and specialized sensing capabilities during site patrolling or in cases of alarms
