Personal Information

My name is Iason Oikonomidis. I was born and raised in the beautiful island of Rhodes of Dodecanese. Since 1998 I live in Heraklion, Crete where I earned my first bachelor in Mathematics (1998-2002) and my second in Computer Science (2002-2006), both from the University of Crete (UoC). I also received a Master’s degree (2006-2009) from the Computer Science Department (CSD) of UoC. During this period I worked under the supervision of Prof. Antonis Argyros on shape matching in the Computational Vision and Robotics Laboratory of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas.
Currently (2009-present) I am a PhD student at the CSD of the UoC under the supervision of Prof. Antonis Argyros. I study algorithms and methods for markerless visual hand pose estimation. More specifically, we have proposed the employment of Particle Swarm Optimization and an efficient GPU computational framework in order to fit a 26-DoF hand model to observations coming either from a multicamera system or from a Kinect (for details see my publications list).
