Brief CV of Catherine E. Chronaki

Catherine was born on Sunday August 8, 1965 in Xanthi, Greece. She received her Diploma in Computer Engineering and Informatics, from the Technical University of Patras, Greece, in 1988 and an M.S. from Rochester Institute of Technology, and the University of Rochester in 1990 and in 1991 respectively.

In the period 1988-1990 she worked on issues related to the exploitation of parallelism in programming languages, and in 1990 she received her Masters in Computer Science and Information Systems from Rochester Institute of Technology. Her master thesis was entitled ``Parallelism in Declarative Languages.''
In the summer of 1990 she participated in the DOM project at GTE Labs, and programmed part of the DOM transaction subsystem. In the period 1990-1991, she studied lower bounds on the decision tree complexity of boolean functions and in 1991 she received her Masters in Computer Science from the University of Rochester. Her master thesis was entitled ``A surver of Evasiveness: Lower Bounds on the Decision-Tree Complexity of Boolean Functions.''
During 1991-1992, she worked on the development of large DBMS, part of a commercial product, a multidimensional spreadsheet for financial analysts.

In September 1992 she joined the the Medical Information Systems Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science, FORTH as the local coordinator for the INDET Topic of the EurIPACS/AIM project. The main goal of INDET is the development of I2C, a system for the indexing, storage and retrieval of medical images by content which is expected to give added value to PACS and support computer aided diagnosis, medical training, and research. She has been a part of this group since then, working on R&D issues in the development of a  regional healthcare information infrastructure. Recent projects involve the development of a collaboration infrastructure using Internet technologies (WebOnCOLL), the application of LDAP directories in healthcare (PCDD), and components for medical image databases.

Research Interests:

Her research interests include but are not limited to medical information systems, image database management systems, programming environments, distributed systems, interoperability of heterogeneous systems, digital medical libraries, WWW applications.

Recent Projects:

Recent work of Catherine  (1997- ) addresses technical aspects related to the provision of integrated services over regional telematics networks. In specific, she has been involved in projects that address design, development, and interworking of middleware services in a regional healthcare information infrastructure:

directory services for resources and user profiles

collaboration services for shared workspaces providing user and contents awareness (WebOnCOLL - developed mainly by X. Zabulis)

security services using smart cards

dicom gateway software (DICOM translation services - developed mainly by S. Kostomanolakis)

A number of health-telematic services have designed on top of this infrastructure:

an implementation of the Virtual Electronic Healthcare Record Concept based on a directory of EHCR segments (see report on PCDD)

telecardiology consultation service for the support of remote Primary Healthcare Centers (see presentation at mednet 98)

directory of healthcare resources (Healthcare Resource Map) (senior thesis of V. Giakoumidaki)

We have also worked on providing access to a cardiology information system using Internet technologies (joint work with P.J. Lees).
