The Laboratory for Autonomous Intelligent Systems (AIS) is a new section of
the Department of Computer Science at the University of Freiburg. The research
goals of the laboratory are methods and techniques which allow autonomous mobile
robots to operate reliably in their environments. This includes techniques for
sensor interpretation and state estimation as well as planning and interaction.
The Laboratory participates in the EU-IST project TOURBOT and in nationally
funded projects.
The head of the AIS-Lab, Prof. Dr. Wolfram Burgard, is an Associate Professor
at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Freiburg. He received
his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Bonn in 1991 where
was a research assistant until 1999. His research focuses on autonomous mobile
robots.
Members of the lab have worked extensively in mobile robot navigation and have
published papers in outstanding journals of the field. Among them are AI Journal,
Journal of Machine Learning, Journal on Robotics and Automation, Journal of
AI Research and Journal of Intelligent Robots. Moreover, several papers have
been presented at highly selective conferences such as the International Joint
Conference of Artificial Intelligence, the North American Conference of Artificial
Intelligence, the International Conference of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition,
the International Conference of Robotics and Automation and the International
Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems. The head of the lab, Professor
Burgard, has received several outstanding paper awards at international conferences:
North American Conference of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI '98), 22nd German
Conference on Artificial Intelligence (KI '98) (Springer Price), and International
Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS '98). The lab cooperates
with leading Institutions in the field. Among them are the Carnegie Mellon University,
Pittsburgh PA and SRI, Stanford, CA.
