WorkshopProgram
Thursday, 12 June
2:00 - 2:15 Opening Remarks
2:15 - 3:30 Invited talk: TheMarvelous Structure of Reality
Joe Hellerstein

Web content is often described as"unstructured data" - an unfortunate phrase. In fact, web searchengines work precisely by extracting and exploiting familiarstructures in the content of the web. Viewed in this manner, thesuccess of web search reinforces the notion that structure isubiquitous. This perspective also highlights an important theme forfurther invention: seek out structure in naturally-occurringphenomena, and build systems to query that structure. Interestingvariations on this theme abound, including systems to query physicalphenomena (via sensors), systems to query systems (includingthemselves), and even systems to query ideas.

The talk highlights the false dichotomy between techniques forstructured and unstructured data, based in part on analogies fromStructuralist and Post-Structuralist philosophy and art. It also argues thatthe main methodological distinction between IR and DB is not about theamount of structure, but about whether the structure is "found" or"engineered". It suggests that a healthy new direction is structuredqueries over new sources of "found" data, including sensor networksand the Internet's infrastructure.
