Projects

Since 2005, SPL researchers have been the project coordinators or PI’s in 8 European Commission, 6 national, and 3 industrial projects totaling more than  5.1 M€  in actual funding for FORTH.

Active Projects:

In AVID-MODE, our focus is on the enhancement of high-quality video, sound, and television delivery capabilities of mobile devices that will enable them to provide interactive and immersive media applications.

  • "LISTA: The Listening Talker EC", FP7 STREP FET-OPEN project, total funding: €1,700,000, FORTH-ICS funding: €585.000, PI for FORTH-ICS: Y. Stylianou, 10/2010 - 09/2013.

The LISTA project investigates how human speakers react to changes in the environment, measuring the relative success of these strategies using behavioural studies, modelling speech intelligibility/quality, and studying algorithms for rapid characterization of the listening context. The central objective is to develop novel techniques for artificial and live speech.

In CS-ORION, our focus is on the design, testing, and evaluation of compressive sensing architectures for enhancing the high-quality video acquisition and delivery capabilities of remote sensing devices that will enable them to provide efficient remote imaging in aerial and terrestrial surveillance.

HYDROBIONETS is motivated by the grand challenge of providing: a) a fundamental understanding of the performance bounds of large-scale self-organized wireless BioMEM Networks (WBNs); b) concrete design guidelines, algorithms, software and hardware architectures to assure the required robustness, fault-tolerance, power efficiency, autonomy and adaptation; c) the deployment of a large-scale and reactive WBN for microbiological autonomous monitoring and decentralized control of water quality in industrial environments.

The principal aim of the APLOE project is to investigate theoretical, technical and practical aspects of a novel approach for physical layer encryption for systems that use OFDM modulation, termed Masked-OFDM (MOFDM). As a result, APLOE is relevant to 4G wireless systems.

  • "Basic Research on Speech Analysis". France Telecom R&D Department, Lannion, France, FORTH-ICS funding: €40.000 PI: Y. Stylianou, 2010 - 2011.

Past Projects:

The ASPIRE project pushed the boundaries of wireless sensor networks performing  original research in several major axes, namely: distributed signal classification; compressed sensing; multichannel audio coding and transmission; and wireless network traffic modelling and localization in WSNs.
