IOLanes: ADVANCING THE SCALABILITY AND PERFORMANCE OF I/O SUBSYSTEMS IN MULTICORE PLATFORMS
IOLanes dramatically improves the I/O behavior of data-centric workloads on shared virtualized servers in the data-centre.
The IOLanes project (www.iolanes.eu) over the last three years, since its start date on 1-Jan-2010 has examined fundamental issues related to I/O for data-centers. I/O is today a main problem for modern applications and is considered one of the issues that research needs to address in next-generation IT infrastructures.

NEREIDs: Embracing Innovation for Preparedness in Civil Protection & Marine Pollution
The NEREIDs proposal aims to strengthen civil protection and marine pollution preparedness and cooperation among Greece and Cyprus, building on international standards, best practices, and innovative Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). An eLearning platform building on innovative concepts of online games, mobile technologies & apps will train professionals and volunteers in plans and best practices supported by R&D in Cyprus, Greece, United Kingdom, and Germany. Project REVAMMAD: Training of new generation of scientists to detect diseases through retinal imaging
The REtinal Vascular Modelling, Measurement and Diagnosis (REVAMMAD) project aims to train a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists for the academic, clinical and industrial sectors, and to trigger a new wave of biomedical interventions; PhD students will be trained by some of the EU’s leading academics and practitioners to further advances in diagnosis, prognosis and prevention of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke and coronary heart disease and retinal diseases. The project is funded by the European Union's 7th Framework (FP7) Marie Curie Initial Training Network programme and has a 3.8 million euro budget.

Statistics of reports received in 2011 by SafeLine
In an event held at the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs to commemorate the "Safer Internet Day 2012" on Tuesday February 7, 2012, the statistics of the reports received by the Hotline Safeline for illegal content or illegal behaviour on the Internet were presented to the Minister Anna Diamantopoulou by Mrs. Meltini Christodoulaki, Communications Liaison SafeLine, Institute of Computer Science, Foundation of Research and Technology (FORTH) .

SafeLine: Safer Internet Day 2012
Today, Tuesday, February 7, 2012, Safer Internet Day is internationally celebrated. The slogan of this year's celebration "Discover the digital world together ... safely!" refers to the convergence of generations, indicating the urgent need for all of us to familiarize ourselves with the Internet, in order to be able to protect our children from the pitfalls effectively, giving them at the same time all the skills needed to surf online in a responsible and safe manner.

Best Paper Award at the EHB 2011 international conference to researchers of the Institute of Computer Science of FORTH
The paper entitled “An image analysis framework for the early assessment of hypertensive retinopathy signs”, presented by Dr. Vangelis Sakkalis, researcher at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on e-Health and Bioengineering 2011 (EHB 2011, Iasi, Romania, 24-26 November 2011).

EuroRec EHR Quality Seal Level 2 granted to EHR system developed by FORTH
Nursing and Medical Applications (under the product name ICS-M), which are part of the software suite “Integrated Care Solutions” developed by the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), have been certified with the Seal of Quality Electronic Health Record (EHR) Level 2 (EuroRec EHR Quality Seal Level 2) by the European Institute for Health Records EuroRec (http://www.eurorec.org/).

EU Project examines the Scalability and Performance of I/O Subsystems in Multicore Platforms
IOLANES (www.iolanes.eu) is a EU-funded research project targeted at understanding and improving the I/O performance in modern hardware that employs multicore architectures by adapting or redesigning the I/O stack. Since storage systems are perhaps the most critical component of modern computing infrastructures, the proposed work will benefit many I/O-intensive applications that support activities of businesses, organisations, and individuals alike.
