Abstract:
Professor Evripidou will share his experience with the Cyprus Entrepreneurship
Competition that has found and organize since 2003. He will also give an overview of
the role of the Universities in promoting innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Universities used to stimulate development in an implicit way through the dissemination
of knowledge. During the 20th Century Universities have started to assume a more
direct role in nurturing growth and the development of innovative products that improve
the quality of life. Many Innovative ecosystems have been created around major
Universities. Entrepreneurship completion’s have been around since the 1990’s and have
been very successful in promoting the creation of successful Start-up.
Bio:
Skevos (Paraskevas) Evripidou is a Professor of Computer Science at the University
of Cyprus. He was born in Nicosia Cyprus in 1959. He received the HND in Electrical
Engineering from the Higher Technical Institute in Nicosia Cyprus in 1981. In 1983 he
joined the University of Southern California with a scholarship from the US Agency for
International Development. He received the BSEE, MS and Ph.D. Computer Engineering
in 1985, 1986 and 1990 respectively. From 1990 to 1994 he was on the Faculty of the
department of Computer Science and Engineering of the Southern Methodist University
as an Assistant Professor (tenure track). He joined the University of Cyprus is 1994
as an Associate professor. His current research interests are in Parallel Processing,
Computer Architecture with emphasis on Data-Flow systems. He also works on
Ubiquitous/Pervasive computing.
He is co-founder and the Chair of the Cyprus Entrepreneurship Competition (CyEC)
www.cye.org.cy. He represented Cyprus in the EU Expert group on “Entrepreneurship
in higher education, especially in non-business studies”. He has organized Seminars
on Entrepreneurship for the Ministry of Education. He is the chair of the Organizing
committee of the UNICA Entrepreneurship Competition and a board member at
Diogenes Business Incubator.
