The main purpose of Department of Education and Training (DET) of ICS is to provide training for human resources, in particular in the Region of Crete, in the area of Information Technology. DET offers training courses in a wide range of subjects, from introductory MS-Office applications to advanced programming techniques and cutting-edge technologies developed by ICS.

Presence

DET has been established in 1984. In its 21 years of operation, DET has developed a rich educational activity in subjects of information technology, providing high quality training to more than 10,000 persons in the region of Crete. DET provides innovative and customised training to cover specific market needs and uses advanced methods and practices in communicating information technology knowledge.

Activities

Specialised training for university graduates towards expanding their career opportunities

The primary goal of DET is to provide specialised training and re-training to university graduates in cutting-edge technologies in order to enrich their career opportunities. Innovative training is provided in new technologies exploiting the research and technology experience and know-how of ICS.

Training in Information Technology for high school graduates

In addition, DET provides training to high-school graduates in order to strengthen their qualifications upon entering the work force. DET staff develops training paths based upon personal interviews with student candidates, combining the department's experience of the labor market and each candidate's professional needs and plans.

Training Human Resources of Organisations and Companies

DET also provides customized training, on demand and upon request, to private companies and public organisations. These seminars are focused on specific private sector training needs for companies that wish to maximize the effectiveness of their personnel in Information Technology.

Certification and Testing

Upon completion of any course, the students are provided with certificates of participation which report a detailed description of the course material and the number of hours each student has attended. In addition, DET provides testing and certification facilities for MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist), ECDL (European Computer Driving License) and Prometric exams (which include a variety of more than 2.000 certification tests).

Research Programs

DET participates in research programs related to the latest developments in the areas of education and training, focusing on distance learning and health care information technology.

SUN Academic Education Center

Since 2001, DET is the first Academic Initiative Authorised Sun Education Center (ASEC) in Europe, offering training courses for SUN Microsystems products. The seminars are offered in specially arranged classrooms, by SUN certified instructors, in Greek. Upon the completion of such courses, students are provided with certificates of participation and can apply for certification testing for Sun Certified Solaris Administrator and Sun Certified Java Programmer via the Prometric Testing Center (on site).

DET facilities

Facilities

DET has facilities in Heraklion (4 classrooms) for seminar presentation. Every classroom can host up to 10 persons and is equipped with an equal number of personal computers. Computers are interconnected via local area networks and are provided with a high-speed connection to the Internet. Most classrooms are equipped with high quality audiovisual infrastructure including high-definition projectors, TVs and videos. Special facilities are provided for certification and testing exams. The quality of DET's equipment provides the opportunity to demonstrate and use cutting-edge technologies in education (i.e., voice over IP, teleconferencing, distance learning, etc.).
