The Computer Science Institute III, University of Bonn, Germany has established a research group for autonomous robotics in 1993. The RHINO group, named after the autonomous robot RHINO, addresses the research questions:
We expect to have a postdoctoral position available for one year starting this fall with the possibility of renewal for a second year. Applicants should have research experience in several of the research areas listed above. Furthermore, the applicant must have development experience in a C++/UNIX environment. The position is associated with the research groups of Profs. Buhmann and Cremers. Funding is provided by the European Community under the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) contract VIRGO. Applicants must have been residents of a European country (excluding Germany) for the last 18 months.
The Computer Science Institute III at Bonn has about 30 PhD students, 5 faculty members, and 10 research associates (Postdocs). 4 PhD students, 2 postdocs, and 3 faculty members are associated with the RHINO group. The Institute is headed by Prof. A. B. Cremers.
Please send a CV, summary of relevant research interests and of recent publications by ordinary mail or email to:
The position is associated with the lab's participation in the VIRGO project, which is funded through the EU Training and Mobility in Research (TMR) programme. The VIRGO project (Vision Based Robot Navigation Research Network) focuses primarily on landmark based navigation. The VIRGO home page is at http://www.ics.forth.gr/virgo
LIA/AAU is particularly addressing aspects of self-positioning and servoing with a strong focus on sensitivity to noise and errors, but the successful candidate will have good opportunities to direct independent research within the theme of the VIRGO project.
The lab has excellent experimental facilities in support of the research activities, including a mobile robot platform, two stereo camera heads, and two Silicon Graphics Onyx super-computers.
The position is open immediately and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The annual salary will be approximately DK 250,000 corresponding to USD 45,000.
To apply, please send your curriculum vitae complete with a list of personal references, a list of publications, and a few representative publications to the following address.

GMD and nine other European research institutes participate in EC's
TMR project VIRGO (Vision-Based Robot Navigation) which commences on August
15, 1996, and will last 3 years. The goal of VIRGO is to coordinate European
research and postgraduate training in the aforementioned area. Specifically,
GMD participates in research tasks concerning Landmark Recognition, Visual
Memory Organization, Planning, and Learning Methodologies. Respective research
activities already take place in GMD's Cognitive Robotics division of the
AI research group at the Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIT).
GMD is looking for a
Post-Doctoral Researcher in Computer Science,
aged at most 35 years (some exceptions possible), with research interests
and practical experiences in Robotics and AI, especially in Vision-Based
Robot Navigation and Sensor Fusion. The researcher may participate in
current research activities such as Behaviour-Based Robotics or the
development of sewerage system robots.
We view vision capabilities as an important feature for the navigation of
complete mobile robot systems. Computer vision research has just started at
the Cognitive Robotics division. Therefore, we are looking for a vision
specialist with good experience in Robotics. The applicant should be capable
of and interested in integrating vision capabilities and evaluation of other
sensor data for robot navigation purposes.
The appointment shall start on February 1, 1997, or later. The period of
appointment cannot exceed 12 months and should not be shorter than 8 months.
Subsequently, it is possible to apply for a similar job at one of the other
VIRGO project partners.
Payment will be according to tariffs of German public services. Applicants
must be nationals of a European Community member state or of a state associated
with the EC. They must not be nationals of Germany. Applicants must not
have carried out their normal job activities in Germany for more than 18
months in the two years prior to their appointment. Additional EC conditions
apply, please check with us.
Please send applications to the address below.
