Digital Patient Working Group

Mission

The scope of the working group is to contribute to the European effort on Virtual Physiological Human and to facilitate multidisciplinary research in this domain with special emphasis on:

Computational frameworks for multi-level (from molecular/genetic to tissue/organ) modelling and simulation of pathophysiological human function.

Multiparameter data and information visualization in all levels (from cellular processes to organ function), as well as tools and novel interaction paradigms relevant for this domain, for example developing methods and tools for mixed reality (e.g. tumour growth simulation in real 3D patient data), and user interfaces for specific medical applications (e.g. educational GUIs for training in 3D simulations).

The modelling issues related to coupling/fusion of anatomical models with imaging data of tissue properties (e.g. CE MRI, X-ray, PET, etc.).

The proposed ERCIM WG intends to promote interactions and collaborations between the various ERCIM R&D groups active in the thematic fields relevant to DH and to facilitate cross fertilization and synergistic activities in collaboration with other relevant groups  and initiatives such as the Europhysiome initiative (www.europhysiome.org) currently funded by European Commission.

In order to fulfil the multi disciplinary needs of the international effort on VPH research, the Digital Human ERCIM WG will bring together several research institutions across Europe from diverse disciplines that can act synergistically towards the achievement of the VPH vision.

Last, the DH WG will promote strong Biomedical Informatics synergies, also actively involving clinicians and biologists, in order to ensure that the research will have impact on clinical applications.
